Summary/Objective: 

The Camp Counselor serves as a peer leader and classroom support staff member within The Yunion’s summer camp programs. This role is designed to provide near-peer mentorship to youth participants while supporting instructional staff and camp leadership in the delivery of high-quality programming.  Camp Counselor Mentors function as culture carriers and frontline support, reinforcing positive behavior, assisting with classroom management, and contributing to a structured, engaging, and safe camp environment.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Youth Mentorship & Engagement

Build positive, supportive relationships with campers, serving as a role model and mentor

Facilitate small group engagement and support youth participation in daily activities

Reinforce positive behavior using established behavior management systems

Provide encouragement, guidance, and conflict resolution support as needed


Classroom & Program Support

Assist Lead Instructors and program staff with daily lesson implementation and activity facilitation

Support classroom management, transitions, and student engagement strategies

Provide one-on-one and small group academic or enrichment support to participants

Help set up and break down classrooms and activity spaces


Camp Operations Support

Assist with daily camp operations including arrival, dismissal, meal distribution, and transitions

Support supervision during recess, field trips, and special events

Ensure adherence to safety protocols and organizational procedures

Monitor attendance and report any concerns to leadership


Team Collaboration

Work collaboratively with Camp Directors, Administrative staff, and fellow counselors to ensure smooth program execution

Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions

Communicate effectively with team members regarding camper needs and program updates


Program Culture & Environment

Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and high-energy camp culture

Model professionalism, accountability, and enthusiasm at all times

Support implementation of camp-wide initiatives, themes, and activities


Other Responsibilities

Participate in all required trainings, orientations, and program activities

Assist with special projects and events as assigned

Perform additional duties to support overall camp success


Minimum Qualifications:

Detroit residency must be confirmed

Former Keys 2 Life Camper or current college student 

Experience working with youth in a camp, school, or community-based setting preferred

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and a positive attitude



Age-Based Role Distinction:

Junior Camp Counselor (Under 18): Serves in a supportive, peer mentorship role under direct supervision of adult staff. Assists with program delivery and camper engagement but is not responsible for independent supervision.

Camp Counselor (18+): May take on increased responsibility including direct supervision of campers, supporting behavior management, and leading small group activities. 


Scheduled Work Hours: Hours vary during the time frame of 8:00am-4:00pm M-F. A max of 120 GDYT paid hours; additional training hours TBD from The Yunion.
